Search engine marketing is thought to be a "play on words," because your success depends upon the keywords and phrases that you ultimately choose to get your site ranked. There are several things that can be done, though, to better your site's odds of ranking, including buying a text only ad, which will be displayed on the search engines listing page, when a specific phrase or word is searched. What no one can guarantee is where your website will specifically appear in the rankings. So, what do these people do to improve your website's odds of finding an effective rank? One way is to recommend improvements to the website's content, title and tags. Most search engines consider those three features a major factor in calculating ranking with algorithms. However, if you don't have the skills or the market is too saturated, you can also pay for related listings within specific categories at most search engine sites. The only advantage of this is that it ensures that your site gets uploaded into their database more quickly than if the search engines spiders were to find it on their own. You still need to learn how to target your keywords and optimize your site content if you want to get listed well in the traditional engines that spider your site and rank sites based upon pre-set algorithms, but you can still pay to buy a banner or text ad on those sites if that option is made available. Your listing will be marked as "sponsored" or "paid", which is also what this type of advertising is known as. There is a group of search engines that follows alternative guidelines, and it is possible to pay a fee to purchase the number one spot in their listings. These sites determine their rankings by how much a person is willing to pay for the top spots. They are called Pay Per Click search engines, or PPC's. You should follow your instincts and listen to logic, which tells you that a search engine that guarantees you a number one ranking for a specific search cannot possibly deliver on this promise.
