The labor market is tough everywhere. Jobs are scarce and the good ones go pretty fast, so preparing for the hunt is crucial. Let's focus on updating a resume and preparing for job interviews.

A resume is the key to open the door to getting you an interview. That is why you have to look at it like the other person (i.e. Hiring Manager or Human Resources Department) would. Of course, include your educational studies, but more importantly, focus on your accomplishments at each of the positions or jobs you have held in the past since leaving school. Whether it be high school or college, the importance on accomplishments/achievements should properly be displayed on the resume. Be concise and do not extend for more than two pages.

Once you get called in for an interview, do some research about the company and their operation, both locally and beyond if it is a bigger company. Be ready to answer questions on your resume, particularly on your past experience. Try to come up with situations that might be applicable to the position. Even if you have never come across them, you can clearly say that although you have never experienced that, this what you would do. It is important for them to know that your answer does not imply that it will never happen to you, but say that if ever confronted with that scenario, this is how you would handle it. This will should that you are a problem solver.

Prepare yourself to ask questions beyond what the compensation will be. What is environment such as how long you have been with the company that you like working here. Try to read your interviewer as well.

By focusing on these some of the typical nervousness will be taken away. Remember, during the interview, you are also deciding if they are a good fit for you, after all, you do not want to be doing this three months into your new job.

These things will help you build your resume, prepare you better and be able to control the nervousness at interviews.
