In the morning I went to see this place just across the river, Chaco-i. It's a rural village and there's very little there, but well worth it - plus there's great views of Asuncion from the boat. I then came back and went out of town, to check the ?andut? lace typical of Itaugua and the ceramics of Aregua, just outside Asuncion. Itaugua is a very small town, the kind of place we say in Brazil if you shift from 1st to 2nd gear then you've probably already drove past the town. There's an iglesia and a plaza next to it like most small towns and it's fantastic to sit in one of the benches and just watch local life happen - although, to tell the truth, there's not really much local life going on. Aregua is slightly bigger, but further away from the carretera, so a bit more cut off from traffic going to and coming from Asuncion home home . I walked around, checked the typical ceramics, tried to go to a couple of cultural centres (which were closed) and was already getting bored when I walked past this beauty salon with a large garden on the side. All the women were having a manicure on the garden and I instantly reached for my camera. I am no photographer, however, and I feel very bad taking pictures of people without asking for their permission first. So I went inside to ask - but I got too embarrassed and instead asked how much it would cost to get my nails varnished. It wouldn't bust my daily budget, so went for a mani-pedi. I wonder now if the manicure was an excuse for a photo or if the photo was an excuse for a manicure. As I was not from the town, I felt the salon owner wanted to give me some 'preferential' treatment and asked me to sit indoors. I then said I'd like to sit outdoors and an armchair was promptly placed outside with the others. She assigned her daughter for my beauty treatment and kept constantly supervising her. I then asked the women next to me If I could take their picture. I thought they wouldn't oppose, but they wouldn't feel comfortable either. To my surprise, they were all too happy to pose for the shot. One of them exclamated to the others 'me va a arrumar un novio americano!'. I obviously look like I'm a gringa and only I didn't realise that. When I took their photo, the others who were also sitting noticed and the eldest of them, a lady probably in her late sixties asked if I could take another one so they could all be looking their best. They thought the whole thing was very amusing and so did I.
