Queenstown is an exciting destination for a weekend or longer winter break. Gay and lesbian ski clubs and non-skiing travellers flock here from around the world during wintertime. It is magical for skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers. Queenstown has the oldest ski field, Coronet Peak, plus the remarkable Remarkables Ski Area. With its high alpine location, north facing sunny aspect, fantastic terrain parks, great snow and friendly, relaxed nature, the Remarkables ski fields offer a true alpine experience. Its wide open bowls are surrounded by the rugged peaks of The Remarkables mountain range. World-Class Coronet Peak is renowned for its roller coaster terrain across a series of interconnected bowls offering exhilarating skiing and riding. Queenstown has heliski operators with permission to land on rugged, remote areas for experienced downhill and cross country skiers seeking bowls and chutes. Starting this season, they will drop off snowshoe tours and a guide to take you on pristine paths. The Queenstown Winter Festival is a great time to visit - it's 10 days of mountain mayhem. On the final day - July 3 this year - tens of thousands of locals and visitors will take to Queenstown streets and ski slopes for the Southern Hemisphere's biggest winter party, to celebrate the official start to winter. Not a snow bunny? You can discover art, fashion, spa sanctuaries and gourmet havens - or just go exploring the great outdoors and historic, charming towns in the area like Arrowtown.
