CCNA Certification: Configure RIP Default Routing

Default routes are sent to routers with which you do not want to share detailed routing information about you network. For example, let's say that we have three routers BR1, BR2, and BR3 (located in three different branch offices) connected to three routers CR1, CR2, and CR3, respectively. CR1, CR2, and CR3 form the core network of our enterprise and are located in the headquarter building.

Therefore, BR1, BR2, and BR3 do not need detailed routing information about the enterprise network because they forward all IP packets toward CR1, CR2, and CR3 respectively. Therefore, you may configure CR1, CR2, and CR3 to advertise three default routes to CR1, CR2, and CR3 respectively through a dynamic routing protocol such as RIP. To accomplish this, you can use either the default-information originate or the ip default-network commands. Read the following instructions in order to configure the RIP process to send a default route using the default-information originate command.

Step 1: Enter RIP configuration mode.

* router rip

Step 2: Configure the RIP process to advertise a default route out of all RIP- enabled interfaces.

* default-information originate

The default-information originate command has the following syntax:

default-information originate [route-map name]

If the route-map option was used, the router will generate the default route if the route map is satisfied. The route map allows you to specify the conditions that should be satisfied in order to generate the default route. For example, you can configure the router to send the default route if certain subnets are reachable, or send the default route out of specific interface(s) only.

The following example configures a router called CR1 to advertise a RIP default route to another router called BR1.

CR1(config)#router rip
CR1(config-router)#version 2
CR1(config-router)#no auto-summary
CR1(config-router)#network 140.1.0.0
CR1(config-router)#network 10.0.0.0
CR1(config-router)#default-information originate
CR1(config-router)#^Z
CR1#

To verify your configuration, use the show ip route command on BR1. You'll see in the output of the show ip route command on BR1, that CR1 still send detailed routing information about the network rather than sending the default route only. To avoid this, you can filter all RIP routes except the default route on R1.

If you have a setup RIP for different subnets within the same network IP addressing space, then you should first calculate subnet IP addresses using a subnet calculator.

Remember to download and read the CCNA syllabus in order to pass the CCNA certification exam.
