A few years ago Chanel announced a special partnership with well-established Swiss watch maker Audemars Piguet. The pair teamed up to create a very special limited edition version of the Chanel J12 watch that contained an Audemars Piguet made movement called the Calibre 3125. Rather than being in black ceramic with steel, the watch was in polished black ceramic with 18k rose gold. The view through the rear sapphire crystal window was of the in-house made AP automatic movement that took this popular fashion watch to a new level, and into the world of haute horlogerie. The partnership between Chanel and Audemars Piguet was curious - as the two brands have no surface level relationship. Geographically speaking, Chanel and APRP (where many Audemars Piguet movements are made) are located close to one another in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland. Chanel's watch arm is there, but Chanel is based out of France. I once asked the two brand how the relationship started. It sounded simply as the two appreciate each other's work and wanted to do something together. As simple as that. For 2011 Chanel and AP release a follow-up watch to the original piece. This new one will comes in a matte finished black ceramic case with brushed 18k rose gold. A glossy finish gives the original a more formal look, while the matte finished ceramic is more sporty and serious. Both contain the Audemars Piguet Calibre 3125 automatic movement that is hand finished and assembled. The case for the watch is 42mm wide while the entire back being in 18k rose gold. My hands-on experience with the piece shows how good looking it is in person. Really a gorgeous piece given a new personality for 2011.
