Of the many obstacles that people face, some of them sound like valid reasons for not exercising. You can overcome your obstacles and improve your fitness by using the following guidelines. Lack of time is one of the most common reasons people don't begin or stick with a fitness program. Between work and family responsibilities, it can be hard to find the time to go to the gym, jog or take an exercise class. Yet if you look at your schedule, you'll probably find that you don't make the best use of your time. One study, for example, shows that the average person in the U.S. spends five hours every day watching television! Think of how much time for fitness related activities such people would have if they even cut that number in half. People also waste time playing computer games, making trivial phone calls, and text messaging. When you cut back on unproductive activities, you will have more time to exercise. One perceived obstacle to fitness is age, as some people feel they can't start exercising at whatever age they are. While this was the conventional wisdom at one time, recent research, however, has shown that people of all ages can improve their condition with exercise. While older people naturally lose muscle mass, studies have also shown that they can gain it back quite quickly by doing strength building exercises. Older people can benefit from walking, water based fitness programs and weight lifting exercises where you do more repetitions of lighter weights. No matter how old you are, or how long it's been since you've exercised it's never too late to begin. Consistency is one of the most important factors for improving your fitness, but many people have trouble with this. That's why it's a good idea to set definite times to exercise and adhere to this schedule. If you only go to the gym, jog or take an exercise class when you feel like it, or when you have extra time, it's not likely you will be consistent about it. To make real progress, you have to cultivate the attitude that your fitness program is as important as anything else you have scheduled. It's really a question of making fitness and exercise a priority in your life. It can be very easy to find reasons to not start or quit a fitness program. However, if you are honest with yourself, you will see that these reasons are really just excuses. You can find an exercise routine that works for you regardless of your particular challenges. If you apply the advice discussed in this article, you'll find it easier to maintain a fitness program that helps you meet your goals.
