The hormone in the human body that is most important in the governance of metabolic process is the thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland is largely responsible for determining the rate of metabolism of your body. This is extremely important to those of us that are attempting to slim down. It is of great importance that you have your thyroid functions thoroughly tested prior to starting a weight loss program. If your thyroid gland is not operating appropriately and you have a deficiency of thyroid hormone, you will find it very extremely hard to shed weight because your basal rate of metabolism will be so low that your body will utilize calories very sparingly. In order slim down it is important that your thyroid is functioning correctly. This is a prevalent issue afflicting people that are chronically overweight. A typical way of comparing the metabolic process of diverse individuals is to determine their basal rate of metabolism. This is the rate at which the body metabolizes stored energy when the patient is in an alert but resting condition and has fasted for twelve hours. The direct measurement of the basal rate of metabolism is made with the person in a small chamber that has sensors in the walls that can measure heat liberated from the body. An indirect method is based on the measurement of the rate of oxygen uptake in respiration since the rate of release of energy from food is quantitatively related to oxygen consumption. The thyroid hormones are of particular importance in regulating the basal metabolism (BMR) and in extended adaptation to stress and, including prolonged exposure to cold. This is why it is important that you have your thyroid function tests performed prior to beginning a losing weight program. The key form of thyroid hormone released by the thyroid gland is thyroxine (T4). Most of the secreted T4 is changed by the liver and kidneys to a more active form, triodothyronine(T3), by removal of one iodine atom. The majority of the actions of iodine are attributable to T3 rather than T4. The key effect of thyroid hormones is to alter enzyme systems that affect metabolic rate. Thyroid hormones potentiate the activity of many other hormones. Thyroid hormone secretion is required for normal growth and development, in particular that of the central nervous system. Release of thyroid hormone (T4) from the thyroid gland is governed by a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that is released from the pituitary gland. TSH levels are employed by physicians to find out if your thyroid is generating an sufficient amount of T4. If TSH is high then the physician can conclude that your level of thyroid hormone is low, since the pituitary gland is trying to induce the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone. This is the the main thing. Get thyroid function tests done if you are overweight. You cannot trim your weight if your thyroid is not working correctly because it controls your rate of metabolism. A slow rate of metabolism will hinder you from losing weight. This problem is easily correctible. The doctor could well prescribe levothyroxine if your thyroid levels are low. This will have a positive influence on your ability to slim down.
