It is more common than not to hear of people raising stepchildren in a new family. As we progress toward the future, old traditions are fading to the wayside as new traditions arise. Though some folks may find parenting step children very natural, most others fall to the wayside. The following are some tips that will make it easier to bond with your step children. To accomplish a positive result, you will have to apply these tips while spending quality time with these children. Your stepchildren will be more at ease with you if you assure them that it's not your plan to replace their biological parent. This is important as long as the children are old enough to be fully aware of the situation. Keep in mind also, that your stepchildren will not be impressed if you immediately start to treat them like they were your own kids. It's imperative that your stepchildren understand your role as the spouse of their mother or father and the fact that you must support your new spouse when dealing with the kids when discipline is necessary. However, this doesn't mean that you and your stepchildren can't be friends. Juggling the diametrically opposed roles of friend and authority figure can be a little complex and will probably not happen all at once. If you're in a situation with more than one child, make sure you spend time with each of them alone. You don't differentiate between your children and your stepchildren. This applies to all of them as a matter of course. Every child is an individual with his or her own life and interests. You need to connect with each child individually and really get to know them. You can form a great bond with a child by taking a sincere interest in the things that interest the child. If they take ballet, participate in school sports, or have a small roll in the school play, be there for them. Always be willing to spend the time to help a stepchild when they are facing a problem. It doesn't matter what it is - maybe they just don't get algebra, or the big bully down the street keeps calling them names. Let them know they can turn to you for help and support. It's easy when you have more than one child in your household to always think of them as "the kids." You must remember that each "kid" is a person in their own right and see them as such. There's one issue that may not seem like a big deal, but can still cause tension and discomfort in a new family situation. This is the question of how your step children address you. You shouldn't expect or ask them to call you "Mom" or "Dad," as this is something that will probably make them uncomfortable. You should always respect the role of the original parent, regardless of the fact that you are now in these children's lives. Deciding whether or not to call you mom or dad should be up to the step children as they adjust to your new role in your presence within their lives. Calling you by your first name should be their name for you until they become more comfortable with you in their lives. As we've seen in this article, there are many aspects to being a step parent, and things don't always go as smoothly as you'd like. After enough time has passed, the step children will begin to accept you as a person in their lives and your adventure with this new family will be fulfilling. Go ahead and take this advice to build and nurture your current family, all the while knowing that you will be accepted in your role over time.
